A font that is free to download<\/em> is not always free to sell with<\/em>. Using a personal-use-only font on items you sell can put your shop at real legal and financial risk.<\/p>\n

What "commercial use" actually means (in plain language)<\/h2>\n

"Commercial use" simply means you are allowed to use the font to make money \u2014 on products you sell, client work, branding, and marketing. But there are a few distinctions worth understanding before you commit a font to your best-selling design.<\/p>\n

Desktop license vs. end-product.<\/strong> Most free fonts come with a desktop license<\/em>. That lets you install the font and use it to create finished designs \u2014 a mug, a sign, a t-shirt graphic, a logo, a printable. Selling those finished physical or flattened digital products<\/em> (a PNG, a cut file, a printed shirt) is almost always allowed. What is usually not<\/em> allowed is selling or giving away the font file itself<\/strong>, or embedding the raw font in an app or template where buyers can type with it \u2014 that typically needs a separate web, app, or embedding license.<\/p>\n

Do you have to give credit?<\/strong> Under the most common free license, the SIL Open Font License (OFL)<\/strong>, you do not<\/em> have to credit the designer on your products. You simply cannot sell the font on its own, and any modified version you redistribute must stay under the OFL. Public-domain and CC0 fonts have no attribution requirement at all. A handful of free fonts request a credit or link \u2014 when they do, we note it.<\/p>\n

What sellers generally CAN do:<\/strong> sell physical goods (shirts, mugs, signs, decals), sell flattened digital downloads and Cricut\/Silhouette cut files, use the font in a logo or brand, and use it in ads. What sellers generally CANNOT do:<\/strong> resell or redistribute the font file, bundle the raw font into a "type your own name" template or app, or claim the font as their own.<\/p>\n
