How to Use VectorDad’s Online Silhouette Maker

VectorDad’s online silhouette maker converts any photo into a solid black silhouette in seconds. The result downloads as an SVG for Cricut and laser cutting, or as a transparent PNG for overlaying in design projects. Here’s how to get the best result.

Step 1 — Upload Your Photo

Click the upload area or drag your photo onto it. JPG, PNG, and WEBP files are all accepted. The silhouette maker works by detecting the subject and filling it with solid black — so the cleaner the separation between subject and background, the sharper your silhouette will be.

The best photos for silhouettes have a single clear subject — a person, a pet, or an object — against a plain, contrasting background. Side-profile portraits work especially well and produce the most recognisable silhouettes.

Step 2 — Adjust the Threshold

The Threshold slider controls which pixels are treated as part of the subject versus the background:

  • Higher threshold — fills more of the image in black. Good if the subject is slightly blending into the background.
  • Lower threshold — keeps only the most clearly defined subject area. Good for photos with strong contrast where you want a tight, clean edge.

Start in the middle and drag while watching the preview. The goal is a solid, filled silhouette with a clean edge and no stray black patches in the background.

Step 3 — Check the Preview

Look at the preview and check for two things:

  • Background noise — small black patches outside the main shape. Reduce the threshold or try removing the background first at remove.bg.
  • Holes in the silhouette — white gaps inside the filled shape. Increase the threshold slightly to fill them in.

Step 4 — Download SVG or PNG

  • SVG — best for Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, and laser cutters. Clean vector paths that scale to any size.
  • PNG (transparent background) — best for overlaying your silhouette onto other images in Canva, Photoshop, or for printing.

Using Your Silhouette in Cricut Design Space

  1. Download the SVG from VectorDad.
  2. In Cricut Design Space, go to Upload → Upload Image and select the file.
  3. Add it to your canvas, resize, and cut on vinyl, iron-on, or cardstock.

Popular Uses for Silhouettes

  • Family portrait silhouettes — a classic personalised gift, especially as framed prints or cut from black cardstock.
  • Pet silhouettes — popular on mugs, tote bags, and custom pet memorials.
  • Cricut vinyl decals — silhouettes cut from vinyl apply cleanly to tumblers, laptops, and car windows.
  • Wedding and event stationery — couple silhouettes on invitations, table cards, and favours.
  • Laser-engraved gifts — silhouettes engrave beautifully on wood and slate.

Tips for Better Silhouettes

  • Remove the background first using remove.bg for the cleanest possible edge.
  • Use a side profile for portraits — the edge of a face in profile creates the most iconic silhouette shape.
  • Boost contrast before uploading if the subject and background are similar tones.
  • Crop tightly to remove as much background as possible before uploading.
