How to use them
- Print at 100%. In the print dialog choose Actual size, not Fit to page. Fit to page shrinks the design by a few per cent, which you only notice once the ghost no longer matches the window pane you measured.
- Cut out the template along the outline. Small curved scissors handle the wavy hem more easily than big ones; a craft knife on a cutting mat is better for the eyes and mouth.
- Draw around it on card, felt, foam or fabric, then cut the material. For a stiffer template that survives thirty tracings, glue the print to cereal-box card first.
- Or skip the tracing and print straight onto card stock, then cut on the line. 160–220 gsm holds its shape in a garland without curling.
- For windows, cut the ghost from black paper and tape it behind the glass; the outline reads from the street at night when the room is lit.
- For a cutting machine, use the SVG instead. It is the filled artwork, so the ghost body and each detail come through as separate closed shapes.
Questions people ask
How big do these print?
Page one of each PDF fills the sheet, so between about 6.5 and 7.5 inches wide and up to 8.5 inches tall depending on the shape — the exact measured size is printed under every ghost and listed under each design above. Page two gives the same ghost at roughly 3.5 in and 2 in.
Can I make one bigger than a sheet of paper?
Use the SVG, which scales to any size without going soft. If you only have the PDF and no cutting machine, our block poster maker will split the image across several sheets that tape together.
What paper should I use?
Plain paper is fine if you are tracing onto something else. If the printed ghost is the decoration, use 160 gsm card or heavier — ordinary copier paper curls within a day once it is hanging.
Do the two-colour ghosts need a colour printer?
No. The PDF outlines every shape in black, including the bow ties, scarves and pumpkins, so it prints the same on any printer. The orange only exists in the SVG and PNG, and it is there so you can cut the details from a second colour of card or vinyl.
Can I use these at school or for something I sell?
School, church, party, your own home — yes, print as many as you need, no need to ask. Selling the template files themselves, or a pack made from them, is the one thing that is not allowed.
