How to use these puzzles
- Pick a level. Easy crosswords have eight short clues and a word bank. Medium ones have twelve clues and no word bank. Hard ones have thirteen or fourteen clues, some of them on Halloween’s history.
- Download and print page 1. Each PDF is two pages: the crossword, then the answer key. Print at Actual size (100%).
- Count the letters. The number in brackets after each clue is the length of the answer — a big help when two words seem to fit.
- Check with the key. Page 2 shows the finished grid with every answer filled in, plus a list of the Across and Down answers.

Questions people ask
Which crossword suits which age?
The three easy crosswords work from about six or seven, because the word bank does half the job. Medium puzzles suit roughly eight to eleven. The hard puzzles — the first Thanksgiving, the kitchen and gratitude — are meant for teens and adults.
What does the number after each clue mean?
It is how many letters the answer has. “The big bird cooked for dinner (6)” is TURKEY.
Are the answers on the same page?
No — each PDF has the crossword on page 1 and the answer key on page 2, so you can print just the first page for the table.
Do I need a colour printer?
No. The grids, numbers and clues are black and print cleanly in black and white.
Can I use these at school?
Yes, print as many as you need. “The First Thanksgiving” covers the Mayflower, Plymouth and the Wampanoag, and works as a quick review after a history lesson.
