Free Printable Handwriting Paper for Kids
Free printable handwriting paper for every stage of learning to write. The kindergarten sheet has tall 1 inch rows; first and second grade use 3/4 inch; third grade moves to 1/2 inch. Each row has a solid top and base line with a dashed midline, so children can see where tall and short letters stop.
There is also story paper with a picture box, a red-and-blue version and a small 3/8 inch sheet for older kids. Every page has a name and date line.
Every sheet is low-ink: thin, light lines on a white page, so a whole pad’s worth prints fast and cheaply on any home printer.

How to use handwriting paper
- Start big. Begin with 1 inch rows in kindergarten, then move to smaller rows as letters get neater.
- Use the three lines. Tall letters touch the top line, small letters reach the dashed midline, and tails drop below the base line.
- Practise a little every day. One sheet of a letter or a sentence a day beats a long weekly session.
Questions
What size lines should a kindergartener use?
About 1 inch from top line to base line. Most first graders move to 3/4 inch, and third graders to 1/2 inch.
What is the dashed line for?
It marks the middle of the row, where lower-case letters like a, c and e stop.
Is this the same as primary paper?
Yes — primary-ruled paper, handwriting paper and dotted-line paper are the same thing.
Can teachers copy these?
Yes. Print as many as your class needs.
