The seven Roman numerals

I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000. Write a number from largest to smallest and add: XVI = 10 + 5 + 1 = 16. When a smaller numeral comes before a larger one, subtract it: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900.

How to read Roman numerals

  1. Split into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. 2027 is 2000 + 20 + 7.
  2. Write each part. 2000 = MM, 20 = XX, 7 = VII.
  3. Join them. 2027 = MMXXVII.
