How to use a number line
- Add by hopping right. For 7 + 5, start at 7 and make five hops to 12.
- Subtract by hopping left. For 12 − 5, start at 12 and hop back five.
- Use negatives. On the integer line, −3 + 5 starts left of zero and ends at 2.
Questions
What is a number line?
A straight line with numbers placed at equal spaces, used to count, compare and do sums.
How do you show fractions on a number line?
Split the space from 0 to 1 into equal parts — four parts for quarters — and label each tick.
What are blank number lines for?
Children write in their own numbers, which helps with counting on from any start point and with skip counting.
