Which Gift Box Should You Choose?

With thirteen free box templates on this page, the right one really comes down to what you are wrapping and the look you are after. For everyday presents and party favors, the cube gift box and rectangle gift box are the workhorses — both come with a matching lid and scale up or down easily. The gable favor box and scalloped round box are made for weddings, showers, and treat tables, while the slim pillow box is perfect for jewelry, gift cards, and flat keepsakes.

When the gift is edible, reach for a food-friendly shape: the cupcake box, macaron box, tall bakery box, and hexagon treat box all hold baked goods and candy neatly. For a romantic touch, the heart chocolate box is built for Valentine’s chocolates, and the petal closure box needs no glue at all. Want a little drama? The explosion box springs open into a keepsake display, and the drawer matchbox box slides out like a tiny gift drawer.

About These Templates: SVG vs DXF & Machine Compatibility

Every box on this page downloads as both an SVG and a DXF file so it works with whatever cutting machine you own. An SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic) is the modern standard for craft cutters — it keeps crisp edges at any size and is what Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio expect. A DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is an older vector format that wider, non-craft software and laser cutters read reliably, which makes it the safer choice for Glowforge and other lasers.

For Cricut, upload the SVG straight into Design Space. For Silhouette, the free edition of Studio can open the DXF, while Designer Edition opens the SVG directly. For Glowforge and other lasers, the SVG works well for cutting and the DXF is a dependable fallback. Each template separates its cut lines (the solid outline the blade cuts all the way through) from its score lines (the fold creases the machine only presses). In Cricut you will set the score layer to Score and attach it to the cut layer; in Silhouette you assign a score or crease action to those lines. Scoring before you fold is what gives a homemade box its sharp, professional edges.

Assembly Basics

Almost every box here follows the same four steps: cut, score, fold, and glue. Cut the shape out, let the machine score the fold lines (or run a bone folder along them by hand), crease each fold firmly, then glue the tabs. A strong double-sided tape, a tape runner, or a fast-grab craft glue all hold well; hot glue works too but can show through thin paper.

Paper weight matters more than anything else. For small favor boxes, 65–80 lb (roughly 176–216 gsm) cardstock holds its shape without fighting the fold lines. For larger boxes or anything carrying weight — a tall bakery box or a gift with some heft — step up to 100–110 lb (270–300 gsm) cardstock or thin chipboard. If your machine drags or tears on heavy stock, slow the speed down and add a second pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these gift box templates really free?

Yes. Every box template on this page is free to download in SVG and DXF format for personal and small-business crafting. No sign-up is required.

Which file should I use — SVG or DXF?

Use the SVG for Cricut and Silhouette Designer Edition. Use the DXF for the free version of Silhouette Studio and for Glowforge or other laser cutters. Both files contain the same box, so pick whichever your software opens cleanly.

What cardstock weight works best?

65–80 lb cardstock is ideal for small favor and treat boxes, while 100–110 lb cardstock or light chipboard is better for larger boxes and heavier gifts.

Do I need to score the fold lines?

Scoring is strongly recommended. The templates include separate score lines so your machine can crease the folds for clean, sharp edges. You can also score by hand with a bone folder if your machine does not score.

Can I resize the boxes?

Yes. Because these are vector files they scale to any size without losing quality. Resize the whole template proportionally before cutting so the tabs and lid still line up.

DESIGN, DOWNLOAD & SELL

You can craft these gift boxes from a wide range of materials — cardstock, kraft paper, patterned scrapbook paper, vellum, and thin chipboard — and finish them with vinyl, foil, ribbon, or hand lettering. The files open in all major design software, including Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, CorelDRAW, Cricut Design Space, and Silhouette Studio. You are welcome to sell the finished boxes you make with these templates at craft fairs or on marketplaces like Etsy and Creative Fabrica.
