Explosion / Surprise Box Template

0Shares

The explosion (surprise) box springs open the moment the lid is lifted, revealing photos, messages, and tiny gifts on its fold-down walls. It’s the showpiece of handmade gifting for anniversaries, birthdays, and proposals. This template includes the base and lift-off lid — decorate the inner walls with your own photos and journaling.

Note: Single-layer base + lid. The multi-tier nested-layer version is coming in a later update.

How to assemble

  1. Cut — Load 65–110 lb cardstock and cut the file. Solid black lines are the cut paths.
  2. Score — Run the dashed lines as score/fold lines (the separate SCORE layer). Scoring makes crisp folds.
  3. Fold — Fold every scored line, folding away from the scored side for sharp edges.
  4. Glue — The base walls fold up and are held by the lid (no glue). Glue only the lid’s tapered tabs. Let it set before filling.

Cardstock tip: Use 65–110 lb (176–300 gsm) cardstock. 65 lb folds easily for small boxes; 80–110 lb gives larger boxes and lids more structure. Always score before folding.

Decorating & Gift Ideas

The explosion box is less a container and more an experience — lift the lid and the walls fall open to reveal whatever you have hidden inside. That makes it the ultimate keepsake gift for anniversaries, birthdays, and Valentine’s Day. Cover the unfolding panels with photos, handwritten notes, ticket stubs, and tiny pockets of memories, then nestle a small gift or a folded cash surprise in the center well. It is a showstopper for milestone moments — a first anniversary, a graduation, a long-distance “I miss you” package. Decorate the outer lid simply, since the magic is on the inside; a vinyl monogram or a single layered flower on top is enough to set the stage for the reveal.

File Formats & Compatibility

You get the explosion box as an SVG and a DXF. Open the SVG in Cricut Design Space or Silhouette Designer Edition, or the DXF in the free Silhouette Studio or a laser cutter like Glowforge. This box has the most fold lines of any template here, so scoring is essential — keep the score layer separate, set it to Score, and crease every line so the walls spring open cleanly and lie flat when closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many layers does it have?

The classic build is a set of nested square layers that step inward as they rise, plus a lift-off lid. You can cut one, two, or three tiers depending on how much you want to display.

Why won’t it close flat?

Unscored or under-creased folds are the usual cause. Run the score lines and sharpen every crease with a bone folder so the walls collapse neatly under the lid.

What do people put inside?

Photos and notes on the walls, with a small gift, jewelry box, or folded money in the center. It is built for sentiment more than weight.

Can I make it bigger for more photos?

Yes — scale the template up for larger photo panels, and use sturdy 100 lb cardstock so the taller walls hold their spring.
